“Roadside Cedars” by Walter Launt Palmer 1854-1932
As sick as I am of the weather in my native New Jersey this year I do find dusk to be a magical time, when the setting sun shines through bare trees and castes those magnificent warm beams of color across cool blue snow. I think Palmer captures this with truly inspiring technique. I was hard pressed to pick one image out of many depicting the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson River Valley. Palmer, trained by Frederick E. Church and influenced by John Ruskin is worth a look to spread a softer more glorious impression on this snowy often difficult winter. Last week I came across Frederick Edwin Church’s work and fell in love with it. He was one of the many Hudson River Valley painters association.
